Homelies

The homily – that is, the sermon delivered by the priest at Mass following the reading of the Gospel – forms part of the Liturgy of the Word. It is first written down to be proclaimed to those attending the celebration. It is, however, a very ancient practice amongst Christians, and particularly amongst monks, to nourish their lectio divina by meditating on homilies outside the liturgy.
